Architecture History and
Sketching are complete! On Wednesday, we all happily finished our History
finals before we headed to Villa Doria Pamphili to complete our last sketching
board. This week has been full of deadlines as we continue to prepare to finish
our last architecture studio project. Our final jury is Tuesday morning and we
head back to the states on this upcoming Thursday. Looking back, our time here
in Rome sure did fly by!
Villa Doria Pamphili
This 17th century
villa was our last subject for our sketching class. The villa casino itself is
set into the hill slope such that the main entrance on the north side is at
least a level higher than the entrance on the south side. The south side
entrance has an enclosed formal garden that is quite neatly kept with trimmed
mazing hedges. Our task was to create an axonometric section cut of this
property, keeping in mind the major volumes of the villa, the garden and the
three varying levels that this property sits on.
The villa is actually located in
the quarter of Monteverde, on the Roman Janiculum. This was probably a 30
minute walk from our Rome CUA campus. The Villa Pamphili park is a true oasis
in the city and of course does not allow any motorized vehicles in the park. I
found out that this park was the perfect place for me to continue my runs as my
gym membership just expired. The park has plenty of running and biking trails
and I never once encountered the park being shy of people exercising!
